Train Doors
Peeking into social life among
Italian Pendolari
In
Italy, the pendolari are a large, active community, represented by
many commuting associations across the country, both local and
national. They organize for meetings and maintain an online
presence, sharing discussion boards and blogs. They even recently
staged a protest against overcrowding on trains and schedule delays
by blocking the rails so the trains could not run. These people
often spend two hours a day every day for years commuting between
home and work. This creates an interesting microcosm where complete
strangers are thrown together in a small space for a significant
period of time. We thought it would be interesting to look at how
they used this block of time, how they interacted with the space and
one another, and how commuting affects their overall health and
well-being. We got on the trains with Pendolari, interviewed them
to learn about how they feel about commuting to work every day,
taking the same train with the same people, for a number of years.
These people don't know yet recognize each other designed FMS
